Gabby Starts College

 

Why is Gabby laughing so hard in this picture? Well, she doesn't have much left to take in high school as far as credits go. But she has enough that she can continue a regular senior year. However, why not get started on her college education, too? So, what we did was wait, and wait, and wait for the college's high schooler coordinator to contact with information about how to get Gabby signed up for a fall class at the same college where Caelan is attending. By the time we heard from her, the class Gabby wanted was full. She asked if Gabby was willing to try an accelerated course in like an eight-week time frame, starting in October and finishing up at the end of the semester. Sure!

Then on the first day of Caelan's classes, Gabby had an email about starting her Business Law class--that same day! I'm not sure how it happened, but Gabby quite suddenly found herself with an online college class, college ID, and college email account :) She was pretty stressed out, because she had to figure out the complex student account, she had to (later) contact the help desk for assistance in continuing to log-in, and she had to figure out how to access her online book . . . not to mention starting the process of turning in digital assignments. All new territory!

However, once she got into the class just a little bit, she started to really enjoy the material and without thinking said something along the lines of, "Wow, school has never been fun before!" Well, thanks a lot. She started laughing and insisted that's not what she meant, but either way, I'm glad she likes her Law class, which we were planning to do on a high school level anyway. She's taking an Accounting class (high school, but college level) that will prep her to take the Accounting CLEP test and hopefully get her Gen Ed requirement met and a Personal Finance class by Dave Ramsey (in addition to World History and Comp/Lit). But, she'll likely have more time in her schedule to do a couple of classes next semester, giving herself a nice head start to the fall. Thankfully, Caelan knew when the deadline was for the first payment (since no reminders or requests were sent, yikes!) and we went halfsies on the class, since I'd planned to buy her curriculum anyway, but hadn't yet.

Also, she's applied for a job at the library as a page . . . her bakery job is a bit too demanding on her days (she gets scheduled eight hours, but generally works closer to nine) with some less-than-dependable people. So, she'd likely keep her karate job, drop the bakery job, and see if the library is a better work environment. Prayers appreciated!
