By the light of the great horn moon? I don't know what kind of moon it was, but it accompanied our midnight journey to the airport. With a little prayer support, Buck got out of work on time. We were all a little groggy, but for such an early flight, we figured it was better to be close to the airport than hours away. Unfortunately, our hotel room wasn't ready and only had two beds. The lady at the desk said, "We can bring in a roll-away, do you think your kids could share?" Buck said, "Did you see my kids walk by?" They're not exactly toddlers :) At 2:45 AM they did find us another room, with the tiniest pull out couch ever. The girls volunteered to sleep on that, so their brothers could have the bed. The room wasn't the cleanest, but we were only in it for five hours. Then off to Florida!!
A friend at church suggested we let Caelan choose our spring break destination, since it is her senior year. When asked, she said, "Beach." Buck searched and searched for a beach with a reasonable price tag, and Florida was the winner. It was SO nice to see green and flowers after a long, bleak winter. And doesn't every family head straight from the airport to Costco when on vacation? A little lunch, a few food supplies for the week, maybe some new clothes . . . win, win!
I had been coordinating plans to see several friends from CA who relocated to FL when our business offices did. We stopped by the home of the gal who helped tremendously getting me ready for my wedding and for the early stages of marriage. She's still a planner and a go-getter, so she had a cooler, beach equipment, and boogie boards ready for us to take to the beach. We crammed all of that in to our rental minivan with our luggage and our Costco finds and away we went to Cocoa Beach!
It was not warm in Cocoa Beach, but our hotel was adorable. It had an Atlantic Ocean view out the back door and a pool/Banana River view out the front. It was built in the 1960s and recently renovated, so it had a cool, old Florida feel (without feeling old :) The decor was cute and beachy and the lazy river, giant sand area, pool inflatables, space to play football, and even a DJ on the day we left made it all the more fun!
But first we needed some food--The Tiny Turtle had the BEST mahi tacos! Caribbean flare Mexican food is so tasty! And the waitress suggested we go next door to The Fat Donkey ice cream shop for dessert. Good call, waitress! I didn't get any pictures. I was too busy eating my ice cream (and trying to keep my eyes open :)
Back at the hotel, I wrapped myself in pool towels trying to stay warm while the kids swam in the lazy river :) We did pop down to the VERY windy beach with the very big waves for a few minutes, because it was only a block away. Despite being completely covered in a sweater and long pants, my hands and forehead still got sunburned. I would say this chilly vacation resulted in the most unique sunburn lines I've ever had, lol!
