I can count on one hand the number of times I've gotten my hair professionally cut or styled in a salon in my adult life. This week was one of those times! I told the girls I was thinking about going for bangs again--it's been a few years since I cut them myself during COVID (because of all the Zoom calls making my forehead look giant, lol :) Caelan said, "Mom, there's a wedding coming up. Don't do it yourself." So, I made an appointment with a sweet lady from church who does Gabby and Caelan's hair, sometimes Buck's and Brennen's, and all the pastors at church, too. I was honestly scared. Isn't that silly? I do the same thing all the time and the idea of changing it into something I might not like was unsettling! Here's a look back at the two before . . .
August 2006
This was that infamous time when I wrote a story for the newspaper about a girl donating her hair at a salon on the square. I felt pretty comfortable there, during the interview, and I hadn't had a haircut since I moved to California after college, so I made an appointment. A healthy trim and my first hair donation ever. I promised Buck I had enough hair that it would still reach to my shoulders--and I was right, that's all they needed for the donation. But the salon lady cut a lil' extra up to my chin! Buck was so shocked and dismayed he had a hard time looking at me :) Poor guy! I was pregnant with Graysen not too long after, and my hair returned to very long, very quickly. But it made me (and him) a little salon-shy for future appointments!
January 2011
We became good friends with a gal from church who had her own salon in another town. Buck, because he trusted her, arranged with her to have my hair done as a Christmas gift. I was babysitting for my friend's little guy, and they were at the salon when I got there--so that was a fun surprise! When I got home, I had temporary curls . . . of which Brennen, who was five said, "Your hair looks scary, Mommy." Lol! Aaaaaand that's the last time I had my hair cut in a salon! (Apparently, I'd cut my own bangs sometime in-between, because this picture from Christmas is the closest I could find to a forward-facing *before* :)
October 2023
I was grateful that my friend (again from church!) took time to listen and slowly shape my hair (which is so fine and straight) into something Buck and I would be happy with--and no scary hair comments from the boys (although Graysen did say I look totally different)! Now I just have to figure out how to style it . . . which will mean buying a heated hair something--a flat iron perhaps? That's what she used, even though I've never had a reason for a flat iron in my life before, lol!
So there you have it--the haircut from my 20s, the haircut from my 30s, and now the haircut from my 40s . . . check back in a decade to see what I do in my 50s (ooh, the suspense!! :)
