Chicken Renovations

Oh my stinky little laundry room guests! We were going to wait until Buck takes vacation during his mom's visit next week to get the second coop set up, but I was at my limit. Plus pup-in-training seems drawn to eating pine shavings with baby chick poo attached--ummm, ewwwwww!!!! The boys needed some time outside working. Gabby joined the party. It took three days, but we are significantly closer to moving our little chicks up to their new condo on the hill :)

1. We cleared the intended coop space with the help of a metric measuring tape. Ten inches? Not exactly :) The big chickens were delighted with the neighborhood construction--it turned up lots of spring worms for their consumption.

2. Time to dig the trenches!

3. Gabby fine-tuning the depths before the wood frame goes in.

4. We found lots of scrap wood from our deck to build the below-ground wooden frame which gets cemented in. Our hopes are that this will keep predatory critters from digging under and the chickens from dust-bathing an opening under their secure enclosure.

5. Quickcrete! My favorite :) I ended up pouring the water, so you don't get a picture of that step.

6. Backfill and let dry . . . your new neighbors are moving in soon, big chickens!

7. Same day examples of how big the "little" chickens have grown. The gray and brown ones are taller than the food and water stations! Not so cute right now, but they'll improve :)

8. Another warm and sunny day! More scrap wood to saw to form the wooden base for the coop.

9. Maybe a quick break in between tasks ;)

10. Drilling the frame into the cemented wood below

11. Our first resident? No, silly :) Graysen was fixing up the ramps and such we removed for easier carrying (still not easy, that thing is awkward and HEAVY).

12. Someone celebrating a job well done :)

13. Pretty fancy digs for the new neighbors! I sure hope they get along with the scrap wood chickens :)

14. And . . . the guinea pig hutch full of chicks is now in the garage. Temps are keeping around 60 degrees, they have two more weeks of baby food, and then out they go! The garage is very confusing to them, so B provided some comfort while he was cleaning their cage :)

15. My laundry room feels HUGE with no animals (except the dog's and their dishes) in it! I should take a picture, but I'm not going to, I'm going to post this instead :)

New digs look pretty fancy.

Colorado

We took the world's fastest--and slowest--trip to Colorado for Buck's stepmom's memorial service. I say fastest, because it took...
