Playing children, hugging puppy (I tried C-Dawg :)

While studying American history, the kids are in the midst of a unit on Native Americans. They designed and built wigwams and tepees . . . so many in fact, that they built a village in the basement (see the giant oragami "canoes" in the back? :) I think there was an earthquake in the village, that's why the horses are napping around the campfire :)

Puppy love! The kids hug the puppy, the puppy hugs the kids :)

More pictures with our giant new friend!

Someone's been sleeping in MY bed . . .

For their latest round of team sticker prize earning, the kids wanted a giant Costco bear! There was no good way to sneak him in without them seeing him, so Buck put his jacket and name badge on the bear and pretended to be in costume . . . I don't think the kids were fooled :) But, because bear came home yesterday, and prize draw day wasn't until today, the bear had to spend the night in our room . . . sure enough, this morning they'd reached 1,000 stickers as a chore-doing team and got their GIANT prize :) Buck said he got a lot of strange looks at work and on the drive home with that big bear sitting in his back seat :)

Moustachio

Well, we've been under the weather for about two weeks now . . . a weird sore throat, fever, then gone, then yucky cough thing, that seems to arrive on Wednesdays and Sundays (slow moving, we're in our second round of Wednesdays and Sundays). Thus, we skipped church for the first time in years (other than not being in town, and maybe last year when we had stomach bugs around Thanksgiving??) and we're calling it a chill day at home. But, we are also trying to work our way through the pile of "big stuff" that remains after our impromptu garage sale (which took place on a day so cold that no one wanted to get out of their vehicles to see our stuff up close :) So, craigslist it is! Which, I don't like, by the way, because people say, "Be there in an hour to get that!" and then you never hear from them again. Frustrating! Good thing it is a chill at home day and we've got no place to be . . .  here are a couple of pics of the kids advertising our impromptu garage sale (Caelan came up with the sandwich board idea :) and a couple pics of Graysen getting a special mommy "moustachio" to perk him up after 10 days of feeling ucky :)

And this is my illustration of all the cell terms Caelan was learning in her 5th grade level science last week, sheesh! No wonder she had trouble keeping it all straight . . . the diagram took me 15 minutes to make and I still don't know if it is 100% accurate :) 1 2 3 4 5 is mitosis just in case you were wondering :)

Tiger and Couch

Graysen made this mask at Sunday School and has worn it daily (well, until he got the fever he's had for the past 27 hours, poor kid). He sings, "I'm Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, I'm Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood!" to the tune of the new Mr. Roger's Neighborhood cartoon on PBS :)

And, because my sis asked for them . . . here are a couple of pics of our new couch. There was a crazy good deal on them at Costco (less than half price!) and our former couch was the floor model we bought when a business went out of business 9 years ago now? It has been through the wringer and was ready to retire. So, when Buck called to say, "There is a ridiculous deal on this sectional," we accepted the truckbed assistance of a co-worker and he brought the couch home! It's very similiar to the California couch he loved, but we left behind. The cushions are sewn in place so no more rearranging!! It doesn't quite fit the historic style of our home, but it doesn't sink down to the floor where the springs are missing either :) A few throw pillows and some pictures on the wall, and I think we will be all set!

This purchase turned our house upside down, partially because I couldn't part with the giant chair that matches our old couch, so we had to do some creative re-strategizing when it came to furniture layout. Something in every room but the kitchen moved. This also inspired my husband to fill the garage with items for sale this weekend . . . we gave a few outgrown toys to the church and let some friends (you know who you are :) pre-sale shop for a few items they've had their eye on, and we didn't know we were going to sell until today, so it all worked out well for everyone! Yay!

We'll see if we can move the rest of the stuff out of the garage and into happy homes. If not, the Salvation Army called and they can have all they want of it (but hopefully we'll make back the couch purchase and call it a wash . . . that would be awesome! :)
This is one confused puppy . . . he didn't know what to do with himself, all the cleaning and rearranging, and new smells and old smells now outside. Might as well take a nap :)

But . . . he's my baby!

I know kids grow out of cribs, and onesies, and bouncy seats, and high chairs, and sippy cups . . . but nothing makes one of my own feel more grown up than getting his or her first adult tooth . . . the words "grown up" are RIGHT THERE. Well, my baby has a wiggly tooth, an overnight super wiggly tooth, which gives me no time to emotionally prepare for this transition. And I have to tell you, I feel bad for the tooth fairy too, because right now, there are at least five wiggly teeth in this house and only Gabby has to get on board the Tooth Fairy Express for this little Tink to go broke :)

First Day of School and Floating Boats

The beginning of our school year proved way more low-key in 2012 than in years past . . . to start off with, I didn't redecorate the classroom to a new surprise theme. We hardly used the room last year, so I figured we would enjoy it this year instead :)

I also have learned a few lessons myself, namely . . . teach the same thing to different levels and everyone is happy (it is possible, and it is wonderful! Only took my five years to figure it out, right? :) Another important lesson--don't start all the subjects at once, ease in, don't overwhelm. We've had fewer tears this year than any of the others, school gets completely finished each day, so I don't feel like we're playing catch-up, and they are enjoying it! Whoo-hoo!

One fun project, while studying Columbus, was making oragami paper boats. This wasn't part of the curriculum, but they needed something to do while I was reading the history stuff to them. I may have created a monster . . . a construction paper, boat-building monster . . . :) Caelan loved this project and folded dozens of boats! In fact, we had so many boats, that "we" decided to float them in the sink to see if they would, er, sink! It took some work, but the addition of Legos seemed to speed the process along. Until all the soggy paper boats sailed onto the floor and the Legos took over the "ocean." When things began to splash out of control, I called for a clean up.

The Legos went wet back into the containers, which is an important note for my next story. A story that really has nothing to do with school, but I'm throwing it into this post anyway. It's called: The Mystery of the Peed-on Legos.

Intrigued aren't you?

So, we were spending a rainy day at home and had a little time after school wrapped up for the day. I decided to invite the kids to play Ticket to Ride with me (a fun board game). The girls agreed. As we were finishing up our game, it became snack time. Buck was in the garage getting the van ready to haul beef, the boys were amped about snack, I was adding up train scores, and the volume in the room kept growing louder. Somewhere in the midst of all this the boys announce, "The Lego bucket smells like pee." Assuming it was the wet Legos from the sink trapped under the lid, I opted to investigate later . . . and then forgot. Until 10:30 or so rolled around and I was getting ready to go to sleep. Then the words, "Lego bucket smells like pee," came drifting back to me.

I retraced my steps to the boys' room and grabbed the VERY full bucket of Legos . . . when I popped the lid off, I just about tossed my cookies, there was an unmistakeable potty smell drowning those treasured little plastic blocks.

Into the kitchen they went, filled the bucket with dishsoap (twice), added water, shook to form suds, rinse repeat. THEN out came the Clorox (three times), shake, rinse, repeat. 15 minutes later, the everything smelled disinfected, so I went to bed.

The next morning I asked the boys, neither of whom could remember or would confess to having done this. I honestly mostly believed them, but obviously SOMEONE used the bucket as a toilet. "Maybe Chauncey?" (sure, blame it on the dog). "Maybe a robber broke in the house and HE peed in the Lego bucket." An interesting theory, but I'm skeptical . . . basically, they were throwing out possible explanations to get their Legos back . . . Legos that were in "time out" until the truth be told.

As the day went on, I found myself in a conundrum . . . neither boy seemed to remember what happened, and didn't seem to be covering each other's tracks. But what if they were? Should I return the toys and reward their deceit? Or wait for a confession, which Graysen eventually gave, "Mom. I did it." Why? "Well, maybe I didn't want Brennen to build?" Hmmm, shakey reasoning, and he didn't even seem to believe himself. So, do I reward the deceit of a false confession? What's a mom to do?

A mom is to wait.

Sure enough, the next night I hear crashing coming from the boys room. Graysen is in the corner, next to a box of Matchbox cars, trying to find a place to "go." I lead him to the bathroom, where he takes care of his business. Then I walk out, expecting my tired little buddy to follow me. He does not. I walk back into the bathroom to check on him and find him . . . in the shower!! Just kind of wandering around in confused circles. So I get him out of the shower and start steering him back to bed. He heads toward our room instead of his own, so I steer him again in the right direction. Allthewhile, I knew the Legos were being returned that night.

Graysen was the culprit (not a robber or our pet) and he didn't remember it because he was basically asleep! Feeling more impressed that he hadn't peed on my carpet, than upset that I had to bleach the Legos (which, let's be honest, probably needed the bath in the first place) and my mommy mystery of the day was solved with a positive outcome. Whew! :)

Colorado

We took the world's fastest--and slowest--trip to Colorado for Buck's stepmom's memorial service. I say fastest, because it took...
