S'more Fun at the Cabin

While on our trek to Wisconsin, we picked up some supplies for s'mores (we also bought some Wisconsin cheese, because . . . well, obviously! :) Buck snagged a few rounds of firewood, and we were ready to enjoy our outdoor fire ring.

Oh wait, there's no way to make fire at the cabin! No matches, no light torch thingies, none of us carries a lighter . . . just short of trying to set paper on fire on the electric stove (no insurance risks there, right?) Buck checked in with our next door *neighbor* and he came over to get us sparking.

It was funny, having stranger neighbors. One guy pulled up on a Mule (the motorized kind) and offered us a can of homemade tomato juice. It sat in the fridge a day or two, and then we got brave at breakfast and cracked the lid. When I say "we," I mean Buck and some of the children ;) Anyway, the guy next door (who seemed to already know the guy on the Mule), I guess, was more of a long-term renter. He and his wife had a dog named Taffy, who was always on our porch it seemed.

With the fire started, the very low-smoke logs a-burning, and the gathered sticks sporting marshmallow toppers, five of the Crew got to business making s'mores. A 6th, very furry member of the Crew, sat very nearby the bag containing the graham crackers, chocolate, and aforementioned mallows. Not once did a crumb drop for him, but he sure tried to look inconspicuous in his hopes of s'more sharing :)

Later yon dog got his own warm place inside by the fire. Buck carried a flaming torch from the outside fire to the inside fire to get this little beauty popping. I'm glad they at least had metal tongs available at the cabin or else this could have turned into quite a crazy situation (just knowing my family's background with fire . . . and the cabin was all made of wood . . .)

As you can see, the sun came out the next morning and the kids enjoyed reading some books, doing some floor lounging, and a whole lot of relaxing while we got ready for the day's adventures.

Colorado

We took the world's fastest--and slowest--trip to Colorado for Buck's stepmom's memorial service. I say fastest, because it took...
