Car Care 101

Hooray for Home Economics--I mean Family and Consumer Sciences! This week's assignment was to learn all you can about taking care of a vehicle.

Thankfully, the day after this lesson took place, Buck had the day off and could do a practical application session.

We're still waiting for the "clean the interior and exterior of a vehicle" assignment to be completed . . . but (I guess) in their defense on that same day we did five chiropractic appointments, an hour-long karate class (during which Buck and I were able to get a little mall shopping done), a stop by our favorite bakery to trade in G$'s bottle cap collection (for some cookies this time), Caelan driving us around after being inspired by the car maintenance lesson, shopping the Habitat for Humanity store for some lumber and do-it-yourself items to be transformed into specific projects we have in mind, a super-rushed dinner prep, and then of course baseball practice . . . all in a day's work around here :)

Can you see both girls at the wheel of a car each--how soon this will be our reality! :) Gabby gets her permit next month, then we'll have two drivers to train. I'll be buying the homeschool version of Driver's Ed. with our tax refund this year.

Some parts are tricky to locate . . .

The boys super wanted to be involved, even though it was the girls' lesson. Boys interested in cars? Whoever heard of such a thing? :)

Oil check--dipsticks located :)

The girls learned a good lesson about why it is important to find a flat place to change a tire . . . even our driveway was steep enough to make the jacked up van roll backwards more than seemed safe. Buck resorted to his extra goodies, like a jack stand and wheel blocks, to keep that old beauty in place until the demonstration's conclusion.

In the meantime, Chauncey was treated to perhaps the . . . fourth . . . leash walk of his life? :) It seems he has mellowed some, and might actually be walkable in his old age! All the neighborhood dogs were very riled up about his cul-de-sac prance, but for the most part, Chauncey ignored their ruckus. Besides--the sweet sounds of Gabby vacuuming Christmas tree needles out of the back of her dad's car all but drowned those rowdy dogs out :)

Jes you could have taught them that being the gear head/ grease monkey you were at that age. Always under the hood checking out the engine. Always trying to make it run just a little faster.

Colorado

We took the world's fastest--and slowest--trip to Colorado for Buck's stepmom's memorial service. I say fastest, because it took...
