One of Those Days

Do you ever wake up with what seems like a really workable plan for the day . . . and then things just don't go they way you expect? I popped out of bed (not as early as my early-bird attempts would require, but before the kids were up, anyway). I treadmilled for about an hour, took my shower, and thought, "We'll get school done by lunchtime!" Um. No. "I'll catch up and read the book we're behind on ALLLL afternoon!" Um. No, again. "It will be a relaxing day." Oh, my, no!

First of all it was windy. That meant that all the recycling and trash that gets picked up on Mondays around here was blowing all over the yard. Mondays are always the windiest. Our giant trash can actually blew over with a crash when the trash guys left it empty in the driveway. And it was raining, sleeting, flurrying, cold. Inside, we were dealing with some emotional difficulties. These seemed to escalate until a mid-afternoon [explosion] reset the mood. Those are not my favorite :( Graysen seems to have a new round of illness with stuffy nose, thankfully his cough is mostly gone. Lessons took longer than expected, school still was rocking at 3 PM and we now had 20 minutes to get to karate in order to officially begin the new session. Only Caelan wanted to go.

Too bad! :) Kids were hurriedly encouraged to change into their uniforms, reset their training gear, wash their mouth pieces, and get in the van. One didn't feel up to the class, so sat with me to learn from the sidelines. On the bright side, it was fun to reconnect with karate friends we haven't seen since before Thanksgiving of last year. Hugs, catch up conversations with mom friends, exclaiming over how much everyone had grown.

In the meantime, Buck was having a rough day at work. He went in really early and ended up staying late. Did I mention that he dropped a ladder on his face and has a nasty bruise and cut across the bridge of his nose? He says it's not broken (he's been through that before enough times to know), but it sure looks not comfortable to me :(

When he reported that he was home, I had him pre-heat the oven for the dinner I'd made (incorrectly, btw--I was in too much of a rush to follow directions). Next we arrived home, unloaded the van, put dinner in the oven, ate quickly, then hopped back in the van for art/ASL lessons. We arrived at the K's . . . and the house was dark. Knocking, proved no one was home. Hmmm? I popped on facebook and discovered that they were at the Y, but on their way back to the house. It was COLD out, so I just used my key to let us in :) We ended up having a nice chat and a fun ASL lesson, where we just made up characters and signed to each other about ourselves (I was a 22-year-old named Billy who liked to play golf and could sing like an angel, see? Totally random!)

The kids and I made it back home, spirits renewed--and then the power went out. It often does here, I don't know why. There was a crash of thunder and then no electricity. We got out the head lamps, the candles, the kerosene lamp (my fb memories included last year, same date and a 5-hour power outage) . . . and guess what? That book I wanted to read in the afternoon? Well, I got my chance to do that by flashlight, because there was nothing else to do. (Okay, the boys did break out their laser tag gear and light sabers, so I guess they had something to do :)

Soon after the power came back on, Buck went to bed--he's got big bosses coming and a bum employee, so he's going in even earlier than early for the next month or two (blech) to make sure all is in readiness. I spent the next hour trying to figure out why our wifi wasn't resetting after the crash. Finally I just gave up, and somehow it resolved itself overnight. Oh, and it snowed, and is still snowing! My plan for this day is stay at home, go no where, sleep, watch a movie with the kids, and read books. After yesterday, we need a break. It was a rough one!

We took the world's fastest--and slowest--trip to Colorado for Buck's stepmom's memorial service. I say fastest, because it took...
