Classic Science

Graysen found the instructions to make an erupting volcano in an Adventures in Odyssey audiobook sleeve. While Grandma was here, G$ and Buck used up an entire bag of flour, had to go to the store for a pound or two of salt, and worked together to form the volcanic mass. It was supposed to dry in 24 hours--nearly a week later (you can see all the finger holes from various people poking it to see if it was dry yet :) the volcano was finally ready for action! Well, a coat of spray paint and a little super glue and THEN ready for action :)

Caelan and Gabby helped G$ mix up the explosive matter. I encouraged them to take the red-dyed experiment out onto the lawn. Buck got down on his stomach to film the explosion--a brave thing to do given our ever-growing tick population. Graysen poured in the vinegar and everyone stood back . .  . and eventually . . . the foamy "lava" . . . worked its way . . . to the top of the cone . . . :)



It looked cool, but the kids wanted a more dramatic effect. So, they DOUBLED all the ingredients and added those to what was left inside the volcano. Now that time they got some action! Nothing shot out the top like the examples you see on tv, but all the climbers--save Mario--soon found themselves amidst the volcanic flow :)

So there you have it . . . homeschool kids, self-driven classic science experiment, and all I had to do was take pictures!
